Composing for Jazz Orchestra
"Big band" music is associated with the dance music of the 1930s, 40s, and 50s, with Count Basie, Duke Ellington and the other greats of that era. The instruments and size of the band may be the same, but contemporary composers have found new ways to use them, exploring and creating unique sounds out of the ensemble. To distinguish this trend from the past, the label Big Band is often replaced by Jazz Orchestra. Here is a piece i wrote for the BMI Jazz Composers Orchestra.
